A four-day trip to Marfa, TX, home of the Chinati Foundation's museum of contemporary art, and the studio compound of renowned sculptor Donald Judd, is planned for Feb. 15-18, 2007 by the Friends of Art (FOA), supporting organization for the University of New Mexico's Art Museum.
The FOA trip will travel by luxury motorcoach and include all arrangements and admissions for visiting the Chinati Foundation collection, Judd's residence and studio known as "The Block", a private wine and hors d'oeuvres reception, and most meals. Marfa is located approximately 200 miles southeast of El Paso near the Chinati Mountain Range of west Texas.
Familiar to many as the town where James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor filmed the movie Giant in 1955, Marfa has a new identity as a center of contemporary art. The Chinati Foundation, opened to the public in 1986, exhibits the work of minimalist sculptor Donald Judd, sculptor John Chamberlain, fluorescent artist Dan Flavin, sculptor Claes Oldenburg and other contemporary artists. The Foundation is located on 340 acres at the site of an abandoned army fort, Fort D.A. Russell in Marfa.
The Judd Foundation maintains Judd's private living and working spaces in Marfa, including studios, living quarters, offices and his personal library of more than 10,000 volumes. The FOA tour will include a visit to his residence and studio, the site of some of his first large architectural projects and installations measuring one full city block, hence its popular name "The Block".
En route to Marfa, the FOA group will stop in El Paso for lunch and a short architectural tour, and at Prada Marfa, the 2005 faux boutique outdoor installation by artists Elmgreen & Dragset outside of Marfa. The return trip on Sunday will include a stop at the El Paso Art Museum.
"Early-bird" fee for the four--day tour, including transportation, meals, and museum admissions is $450 per person for FOA members who register and send in a deposit by Dec. 20. After that deadline, the cost for FOA members is $500. The fee for non-members of FOA is $500 for early birds, and $550 after Dec. 20. Hotel costs are additional. FOA has negotiated special rates of $120 per night for a single or double room at Marfa's historic Paisano Hotel where scenes from Giant were filmed.
Space will be limited for the FOA Marfa tour. Those wishing to participate must secure reservations by Jan. 10. Total remittance is due by Feb. 1. For additional information and reservation forms, contact FOA-Marfa-trip@comcast.net (FOA-Marfa-trip@comcast.net).
