Western writer Slim Randles relaxes on his front porch with his mentor and
best friend, his coondog. His monthly column, "Ol' Slim's Views From the Porch,"
appears in New Mexico Magazine each month, and his syndicated newspaper
column, "Home Country," appears weekly in 91 newspapers nationwide.
Randles will be a guest speaker at Western Mardi Gras, Tuesday, February 20,
at the IMAX Theater at the Museum of Space History. The event premiers
the first film of the White Sands Film Festival, the IMAX production of
"Ride Around The World", a history of the global horse culture.

Noted New Mexico author Slim Randles will join Southwest historian Leon Metz as a speaker at Western Mardi Gras on Tuesday evening, February 20th, at the Clyde W. Tombaugh IMAX Theater at the New Mexico Museum of Space History for the White Sands Film Festival opening of the IMAX film "Ride Around The World".

Slim Randles is a veteran newspaperman and outdoorsman, and was a registered outfitter and guide until someone made the mountains steeper. Both his novels and non-fiction books are based on rural living, and he has also been an award-winning columnist for the largest daily newspapers in Alaska and New Mexico. In addition to writing, Slim has paddled a canoe down the Yukon River, driven a dog team in the first Iditarod Race, built a log cabin 12 miles from the nearest road, was a roper and bulldogger in rodeo, trained horses, and packed mules in the eastern High Sierra. He is also experimenting with new methods of growing fruit trees in places where they have no business at all. He has owned two small weekly newspapers in past years, and has been managing editor of a medium-sized daily as well.

His monthly column, "Ol' Slim's Views From the Porch," appears in New Mexico Magazine each month, and his syndicated newspaper column, "Home Country," appears weekly in 91 newspapers nationwide.

The author of eight books, Slim's latest is the novel "Sun Dog Days" about a hunt for wild horses. He is also author of "Ol' Max Evans, the First Thousand Years," the biography of the noted New Mexico writer and cowboy.

Slim's coonhound thinks he's wonderful, but he must wear corrective lenses. Slim, not the dog.

Western Mardi Gras is sponsored by the International Space Hall of Fame Foundation, in conjunction with area businesses such as Pat Papson Insurance, White Sands Mall, Comfort Inn, Vision Ford and Runnels Broadcasting. There will be two showings of Ride Around the World, along with the premier of the short film The Adventures of Broke Truck Mountain.

Tickets for Western Mardi Gras and the film premiers are $25 per person or $40 per couple. The Western Mardi Gras reception begins at 6:00 pm followed by the speakers and film showings. The first 100 ticket holders will attend the film and speaker at 6:30 pm, the second 100 ticket holders will attend the film at speaker at approximately 7:50 pm. Western or Mardi Gras costumes are encouraged. To purchase tickets, visit the New Mexico Museum of Space History Gift Shop or call them at 505-437-0318 to purchase with a credit card.
