Festival Fills Alamogordo With Movie Fans
Producers, Directors, Casts, Crews & Patrons Mingle in Space City
The week of February 20 – 25 was very busy in Alamogordo as the community pulled out all stops to successfully host the 2007 White Sands Film Festival. This was the festival’s third year in New Mexico’s space city and it has grown and improved each year. The week-long event is growing fast in popularity here in the state and gaining acceptance and respect on both the national and international levels. From what Steppin’ Out’s reporters saw last week, the staff and facilities for the festival are great and the films submitted for competition there are truly first class as well.
“We’re very pleased with the attention and the quality of films and people the White Sands Festival has drawn in the past three years,” Festival Executive Director Joan Griggs told Steppin’ Out, “It keeps growing each year and the number and quality of the films we’re seeing gets better every year too. It’s a lot of work; but it is great chance to promote New Mexico and the Alamogordo / Otero County area plus it brings respected film industry folks and some really fine entertainment to town as well. That way, they get to see what our community has to offer.”
It was evident to Steppin’ Out that what Griggs said was true. The Festival attracted at least 20 high-quality professionally produced films and an unknown number of lesser-known competitors this year. Considering the number of excellent films that did not win awards the competition for awards was obviously very tough.
Otero County's Film Liason, Jan Wafful, echoed Griggs comment adding, "This was my first year in this position and in working with the festival. So, naturally things have been pretty hectic. As you might expect, there have been a few minor glitches but overall things ran very smoothly. I'm looking forward to working on this project again next year. The people and organizations we've worked with have all been super and have done a terrific job."
From our perspective, Steppin' Out saw no long faces and heard not a single negative comment from anyone. That's amazing for a major event that's growing like a weed and involves hundreds of people. Our hats are off to the management team running the White Sands Festival. They put on a fine event with style and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. We're already looking forward to next year's festival.
We hope to see you there next February. But before you get in line to buy next year's tickets, here's what happened in Alamogordo this year.
