Before he joined up with LFTC, Mideke had mixed elbows and film clips with some of the leading-edge filmmakers.

He will review some of his work during this special presentation, "Michael Mideke: 40 Years of Experimental Film and Video."

He was introduced to the art of making moving pictures when he arrived at Antioch College, Ohio in 1962. "Seeing how movies are made transforms the seeing of movies," he says in his notes. It transforms the "seeing of world, too." And that, he says, leads to "art in the sense of magic…making impressions of the world with camera or even without and then arrang(ing) the impressions until something is formed which never existed before."

He started filmmaking in 1962, with pretty much of an "experimental bias," he says. "I got to dabble in the edges of the NY Underground scene, with folks like Marie Menken, Willard Maas, Jack Smith, Jonas Mekas, Stan Brakhage as the wise old masters. Continued on into the ‘80s when it all became too much and much too expensive and I took a long vacation into large format still photography until digital video ripened and I got re-seduced by moving pictures."

It starts with some early Black and White films he has digitized, including "TWIG?" (1967) which showed at the NY Film Festival, in 2000. "Then we have a selection of video work from 2001 to the present. In all 10 pieces totaling 90 minutes," he said.

The show will inaugurate LFTC’s idea of using the Theatre as a venue for screenings and other events as well as theatre productions.

"Conditions are still primitive," Michael notes, "so I’ll be using a multi-media projector to throw images on an old-fashioned Kodak movie screen. Appropriate to the old days of "Underground Movies" being screened in living rooms."

So come enjoy an evening with LFTC’s Michael Mideke, see some great films and benefit the LFTC’s building maintenance fund.
