June events @ Petroglyph National Monument

Saturday & Sunday, June 2 & 3. 10am to 4pm:

Traditional Craft Demonstration Turkey Feather Blanket Weaving and American Indian Jewelry by Darris Lovato of Santo Domingo Pueblo.
Darris Lovato learned the rare craft of hand weaving feathers into blankets from his mother, Caroline Lovato. By soaking turkey feathers in water to soften the quills, each feather is twisted around cordage. The
long strands of feather cords are tightly interwoven to create a feather-light but warm blanket. Darris also creates turquoise and shell in-lay jewelry including neck laces, bracelets, and earrings.

Demonstration will take place at the Visitor Center located at the intersection of Unser Blvd. NW & Western Trail.

Saturday & Sunday, June 9 & 10. 10am to 4pm:

Traditional Craft Demonstration Mimbres pottery replications by Michael Kanteena
A graduate of ENMU in Portales, Kanteena has perfected his pottery technique over the past 14 years. Behind each piece are hours of research into Mimbres culture and history conducted by Kanteena and wife, Cynthia. Only then is each piece precisely hand-formed and painted with the traditional black designs of the Mimbres people. Kanteena intentionally breaks some finished pieces then glues the pieces together to make the pottery look like authentic artifacts. If it were not for his signature on the bottom of each piece, people would believe these were artifacts recently discovered in an archaeological dig. Come and enjoy Michael Kanteen's contemporary and pre-Columbian Mimbres reproductions, for they are very unique in the pottery world.

Demonstration will take place at the Visitor Center located at the intersection of Unser Blvd. NW & Western Trail.

Saturday, June 16. 9am to 4pm:

Flint Knapping Workshop instructed by Luther Rivera
Petroglyph is hosting a flint knapping workshop at the Visitor Center located at Unser Blvd. NW and Western Trail. Workshop fee is $35. Registration required. Bring your own lunch and beverages.

Step back into the past with master flint knapper Luther Rivera and learn the ancient techniques of flint knapping, the American Indian art of making stone tools and projectile points. Workshop includes personalized instruction and all the tools and materials necessary to
make arrowheads and points.
For over 20 years Luther Rivera has made the tools of our American Indian ancestors using traditional materials such as obsidian (volcanic glass) and deer antler. In 2001, Rivera was honored with the New
Mexico Heritage Preservation Award; received a Forest Service Award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture; and received an Achievement Award
from the Archaeology Society of Albuquerque for making historically accurate American Indian tool reproductions. Rivera's award-winning obsidian arrowheads, spear points, and bone tool reproductions are on display at museums throughout the southwest.

Traditional Craft Demonstration Pueblo Indian Ceremonial Drum making by Gabe Trujillo

Gabe Trujillo continues the Cochiti Pueblo reputation for fine drummaking. Historically drums were made for ceremonial and trade purposes but today Gabe carefully crafts his drums for people all over the United States and from as far away as Brazil, France and India. Gabe specializes in making tall ceremonial drums traditionally painted a solid color with a contrasting band near the top. Each carry his unique touches; clouds, braided handles and painted animal images, all characteristic of Gabe's drum making style.

Demonstration will take place at the Visitor Center located at the intersection of Unser Blvd. NW & Western Trail.
