Madrid, NM – Digital art has come a long way since the controversial days of its beginnings. Now, Diana and Mel Johnson, of Johnsons of Madrid Galleries of Fine and Fiber Arts – always on the cutting edge of art exhibits – will show nine digital masters and what they have created.

“None of these digital folks simply adjust their photos on the computer– they create original digital paintings or start with a photo and digitally add or subtract visual elements as they create something new,” promise the Johnsons.

The nine are: Ursula Freer, Jim Alford, Ruth Butler, Bomi Parakh, Paul Wilkins,Wallace Garrison, Wayne Gesterfield, JD Jarvis, Myriam Lozado.

The exhibit, in the Johnsons’ largest gallery, is one of four featured during August. Continuing in August are: Art & The Picture Plane #3 with works by fiber artists, painters, photographers, printmakers and sculptors in three galleries; Wearables & Wallables, 30 fiber artists in Diana Johnson’s studio/gallery; and Mel Johnson: Solo Show, acrylic paintings in his studio/gallery.

If you wonder how in the world the Johnsons can exhibit so many shows at one time, you’ll have to drive up to Madrid to find out. Their rambling galleries are housed in a renovated Madrid Garage Shop, an historic building in the heart of Madrid. The former mining then near-ghost town along the Turquoise Trail is enjoying a growing popularity revved by the recent movie made here, Wild Hogs.
Enjoy a beautiful drive along the historic Turquoise Trail to Madrid where a plethora of art possibilities await.

Johnsons of Madrid hold opening receptions each first Saturday of the month from 2-4. The gallery is open Mon- Sat. 10 – 6 and Sun 12-5. For more information, call 505-471-1054 or email djofm@yahoo.com, or check out this website: VisitMadridNM.com

In September, the galleries will feature a group artists exhibit in all media and drawings by five Madrid area artsts in their largest gallery along with fiber artists in Diana Johnson’s studio/gallery and Mel Johnson’s acrylic paintings in his studio/gallery.

In the years since 1973, Diana & Mel Johnsonhave gradually been transforming their old MADRID GARAGE BUILDING into many gallery spaces and now have one of the finest exhibition spaces in New Mexico.

Described by some as an "eclectic" gallery because they exhibite a wide range of art, the couple is narrowing the focus of the artwork in their changing exhibitions.

For at least a century in art, the emphasis has not been on the illusion of deep space but on the "picture plane", not on photographic realistic representation, but on design and composition.

Artists have created many styles that "relate to reality," says Diana Johnson, “but keep the viewer involved with marks that go up, down sideways, diagonal, etc. across the flat surface being used. Sculptors too, have often abandoned realism for a freer expression of form.

“With art in the gallery reflecting this focus, we hope to create a visual dialogue for the public and the artists that will assist them in their efforts to break new ground in the world of art.

“As we have always strived for the best quality in the works of the 100 northern New Mexico artists we represent, we will continue to show the best documentary photography and landscapes in all media in other parts of the gallery.”
