A couple of hundred friends attended the dedication event.
Members of Friends of the Bosque NWR had worked tirelessly for years to raise funds to build the new educational annex to the visitor's center. But it was through the generosity and philanthropic efforts of the Lannan Foundation that Friends of the Bosque finally managed to complete the funding and put their money raising efforts over the top. Thus it was Lannan Foundation contribution that enabled them to build the long awaited addition to the visitor’s center now rather than years down the road.

The Visitors' Center addition was named after Christina Ann Lannan
The Visitors' Center addition was named the Christina Ann Lannan Educational Annex. It is named after the daughter of J. Patrick Lannan, the Foundation's chairman. Christina Lannan was a great lover of the Bosque and a member of the friends group before her untimely death at age 37 in 2004.
Speakers at the event included Mr. Jon Morrison, President of Friends of the Bosque NWR. Morrison was the first speaker and recalled how hard the friends had worked to achieve this goal and expressed their gratitude to the Foundation for their funding support on the project. Others who spoke and remarked on the success of the project included Project Team Leader Jerry Goffe, a well known and respected Bosque Photographer, J. Patrick Lannan, Chairman of Lannan Foundation, Mary Pat Day, Board Member of The Foundation, Larry Bell, Assistant Regional Director for External Affairs at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Dr. Benjamin Tuggle - U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Acting Regional Director.
Each speaker lauded and applauded the efforts of the Friends of the Bosque as they worked for years to raise funds for the project. Several speakers especially singled out Ms Betty Davis who has devoted herself for years to inspiring and motivating the Friends group and to serving the needs of the Bosque, its staff and its visitors as well as achieving the goals of the project. Dr. Tuggle noted during his talk that this victory belonged to the Friends of the Bosque and pointed out they had certainly earned the financial support they received from Lannan Foundation.

The official grand opening ribbon was cut by Reinhard Haushofer
The dedication ceremony lasted less than 30 minutes and ended with a ribbon cutting which included: Mr. Lannan, Dr Tuggle, Christina Ann Lannan's partner Reinhardt Haushofer, State Representative Donald Tripp, a representative from Congressman Steve Pierce's office, Betty Davis, Mary Pat Day, Mr. Morrison, Mr. Goffe and several other members of the friends group and the US Fish and Wildlife Service Bosque staff.
Steppin' Out captured both photos and video of the event for the enjoyment of our readers and for the many members of Friends of the Bosque who were unable to attend this dedication ceremony. Our 16 minute video is available for both dial-up and broadband users. It can be played on either Window Media Player or Real Player. The recording includes the full content of all speaker remarks except those of Mr. Morrison. Our reporter arrived just as Mr. Morrison began to speak. By the time his cam was up and running Mr. Morrison had finished his brief talk. We regret for the omission of his remarks.
The visitor's center itself is greatly expanded with a new public reception hall with a large display area, a new much larger gift shop, a new building entrance and two large rooms that will soon be devoted to training and education services. Photos Steppin' Out took of the new facility and the dedication ceremony are in a gallery that can be reached through the link at the end of this article.
Steppin' Out joins others in applauding and congratulating Friends of the Bosque in this highly successful project.
