Publisher's Note:
Steppin Out recently received the following email from Mr Roland Thanner from the EU state of Austria. He would like to acquire an original "Free State of Socorro" stamp. We're wondering if any of our loyal readers can assist him in his quest? Or is there someone who can shed light on the stamp he refers to? If so, please contact either: tgplatt@sonewmex.com (tgplatt@sonewmex.com) (505-838-0784, or pengwen@sonewmex.com (pengwen@sonewmex.com) (505)-835-2127.
Thanks!

Dear Mrs. Gwen Roath,
In internet I accidently found your report 'Socorro. Your next stop'. At the end of your report you wrote:
... Socorro residents maintain an independent attitude, reminiscent of its “Wild West” past. In the ’50s, a few citizens trumpeted the idea that Socorro had somehow escaped all legal transfers from Spain to Mexico to the U.S. and started a secession campaign. License plates reading “Free State of Socorro” can still be seen ...
I (born 1969) am a private stamp collector specialized in local and private issues from 1945 to 1990. In my documents I have a copy of a 'stamp' for a 'Free State of Socorro'. Since almost 20 years I try to get one issue of this stamp. I have already contacted all stamp dealers I know from Albuquerque and other towns in New Mexico as well as others world-wide, but nobody knew this label and, therefore, nobody could help me.
Therefore, my question to you: can you give me a name and address of a person who can help me in my tries to get such a (5 cent) stamp/(souvenir) label (issued perhaps in 1953?) for a 'Free State of Socorro'? Do you know anybody who is still alive and was working for this idea at that time?
In advance, I am thankful for any kind of help by you.
Best Regards, Roland Thanner from Austria/Europe.
