Music from local to international
Albuquerque, NM – May and June are two wildly different months for Albuquerque Music Presenters – AMP Concerts.
May is chock full of cool small shows, with a double dose of music from Africa, while June is full of major events spanning two cities and world premiers (Lucinda Williams and Jenny Lewis in Santa Fe, the world premier of the Iraqi/Indian collaboration with Rahim AlHaj and Amjad Ali Khan, the recasting of Laurie Anderson's "Hidden Within Mountains" video for planetarium projection and more).
Here's what's on tap: (For more information visit www.ampconcerts.org

Susan Gibson
special guests Jana Pochop & Lisa Gill
Friday, May 15, 8 PM
on the patio at The Source
1111 Carlisle SE
This event is part of National Women's Wellness Week.
Susan Gibson's "Wide Open Spaces" was a massive hit for the Dixie Chicks and her platinum calling card to fame. With the Chicks' incredible harmony and instrumentation, the title track and album went multiplatinum, selling in excess of 16 million copies. That is clearly the most famous Susan Gibson song, but her catalog is full of songs that show her keen insight and excellent sense of humor. She spent several years leading the alternative country band The Groobees before heading out on her own. She's just released her third and latest studio album, New Dog, Old Tricks, which features new songs and remakes of songs she did with the Groobees.
Jana Pochop used to live in Albuquerque and first met Susan when we presented her at a Bosque House Concert many years ago. The two hit it off and Pochop eventually moved to Austin, where she works with Susan and performs on her own as a singer/songwriter. It'll be great to have Jana back in her old home town. Wonderful local poet Lisa Gill will start the evening and discuss Women's Wellness Week.
Extra Golden
Tuesday, May 19
The Cooperage
7220 Lomas NE
8:00 PM Concert (Doors open at 6:30 PM)
$15 advance, $20 day of show
This is going to be a very intriguing concert! Extra Golden are the band that came into existence when two members of the DC indie band Golden went to Kenya while working on a doctoral thesis. They met the members of Orchestra Extra Solar Africa and fell in love with the music of the region. The group created a curious blend of Benga and indie rock that has continued to grow and evolve. Heading into their third album, they have quit visiting each others cultures and are now truly a band that is developing a sound that spans both worlds. "What has been achieved here is an utterly seamless meld of tough, tight grooves; enchanting vocals; entrancing rockist guitar stylings; and shifting, click-clacking taut rhythmic energy."
The Waybacks
Thursday, May 28
The Cooperage
7220 Lomas NE
8:00 PM Concert (Doors open at 6:30 PM)
$15 advance, $20 day of show
Back for the third time! They draw freely from the old school and the old world, but The Waybacks are no throwback. They've been erroneously pigeonholed as a bluegrass band and celebrated as purveyors of "acoustic mayhem." They are as uninhibited and unpredictable as the eclectic San Francisco Bay area that claims them, and for nearly a decade, their experiments have always proven sharp-witted and musically dazzling. The Waybacks are enjoying a refreshed repertoire—one that's touched by Memphis soul, honky-tonk, Parisian swing, classical music, vintage blue pop and much more besides.

This collection of songs and stories includes pieces from Anderson's acclaimed solo shows The Speed of Darkness, Happiness, The End of the Moon and Homeland. In an intimate evening of voice, electronics and violin, Anderson spins offbeat adventure stories wtih her characteristic wit and poignancy. The evening also features her solo violin pieces which have become increasingly complex and symphonic. As NASA's first artist-in-residence, Anderson draws on her recent research and travels. Part travelogue, part personal theories, history and dreams, The End of the Moon looks at the relationships between war, aesthetics, spirituality and consumerism. Anderson explorers the contemporary meanings of freedom and time as well as the tangled ways in which we decide what is beautiful now.
The video "Hidden Within Mountains" will also be shown on the immersive planetarium dome on June 11, along with some of the best videos from the past five years of DomeFest. Laurie will introduce the evening with a short reflection on melding art and technology. The video is being recast by UNM's ARTS Lab for dome projection. This will be the first time the piece has ever been shown in this way.

Tickets: $21 advance, $25 day of show
Tickets available from the Lensic Box Office (505-988-1234) and TicketsSantaFe.org. In Albuquerque, they are also available in person at Bookworks and Natural Sound.
The last three years have brought three very different albums from Jenny Lewis. There was her instant country-pop classic the Watson Twins, Rabbit Fur Coat; Rilo Kiley's Under the Blacklight, a dark tryst with 1980s rock; and her new Acid Tongue, an ensemble studio residency recorded live. "With Acid Tongue I wanted to make a record in a room with my friends surrounding me, straight to tape. We had a ton of guest musicians come in and play without a lot of embellishments," says Lewis. The Australian called Lewis's current solo tour "a lesson in rootsy bravado, sensitive lyricism and sexy star quality."
Opening the show are the Heartless Bastards. Lead vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Erika Wennerstrom has long been a standout purveyor of raw garage rock. On The Mountain, the Bastards' third album, Wennerstrom's throaty vocals are as dominant as ever, backed by powerful rock riffs and quieter acoustic flourishes.
Bert Jansch
Friday, June 26
The Cooperage
7220 Lomas NE
8:00 PM Concert (Doors open at 6:30 PM)
$20 advance, $25 day of show
Tickets available through AMPCONCERTS.ORG, Bookworks and Natural Sound.
One of the most important figures in contemporary British folk, Bert Jansch brought an unsurpassed combination of virtuosity and eclecticism to the acoustic guitar, both as a solo act and a key member of Pentangle. Also a talented songwriter and affecting (if gruff) vocalist, he wrote dark and sparse material that recalled the folky side of Donovan, though he was much less pop-oriented than the psychedelic pop troubadour. Incorporating elements of blues, American folk, and British Isles traditional music into his playing, his influence was not only immense in the British folk scene, it also extended to the rock world -- Neil Young and Jimmy Page, two electric guitar gonzos who often turn to acoustic picking as well, have acknowledged Jansch as a major influence. Young went as far as to tell Guitar Player that Jansch did for the acoustic guitar what Jimi Hendrix did for the electric. A revered elder statesperson in the U.K., he has escaped widespread notice in the States. He has all the prerequisites for a large cult following on the order of Nick Drake, another musician whose work contains definite echoes of Jansch.

Tickets: $18 advance, $20 day of show
Tickets available from the Lensic Box Office (505-988-1234) and TicketsSantaFe.org. In Albuquerque, they are also available in person at Bookworks and Natural Sound.
Thomas is one of the seminal figures in modern African music and totally changed the face of music from Zimbabwe. He was a headliner at last year's ¡Globalquerque! and will be in town for three weeks recording a new album with Manny Retinger of Ubik Studios.
Before Thomas Mapfumo, who cut his teeth playing Otis Redding and Elvis Presley covers as a teenager, all of Zimbabwe's homegrown music was made using rhythms that had been passed down for generations. The "Lion of Zimbabwe" was first to break this tradition, creating his own style of music—chimurenga, which means struggle—to accompany lyrics that called for the violent overthrow of his country's white minority rule. Mapfumo was dispatched to prison camp on charges of subversion in 1977. He arranged his release by agreeing to a special concert for his country's political leaders, but then played them only his most indignant material. Mapfumo formed Blacks Unlimited after Zimbabwe's 1978 independence. The band's celebration songs turned to protest after Robert Mugabe was elected prime minister in 1980. The Lion of Zimbabwe, after years of harassment from Mugabe and his minions, moved to Oregon in the late 90s. Mapfumo continues to sing and speak out about the problems of Zimbabwe.
