Several days ago, Steppin' Out received a touching letter seeking our support from the "Laugh For Life Aids Benefit" which will be held in Albuquerque on August 4th. The benefit involves a live stage performance at KIVA auditorium for which tickets are now being sold. Its purpose is to raise funds to support the programs that assist those who have been stricken with HIV / Aids in New Mexico. Naturally, Steppin' Out wants to support this cause. We just weren't sure how to do that. So, we visited their website to see what they had to say. Their words are quite profound.

This devastating disease virtually defines the story of human tragedy in the modern world. To date it has infected over 50,000,000 people worldwide and directly impacts countless millions more. It has reached the scale where it may already be the most devastating plague in human history. Indeed, it literally threatens the very existence of humankind. Under such circumstances, how could we not pass this appeal for support directly along to our readers?

In the end, we agreed to write just a few words about this benefit. Instead, we chose to directly quote "Laugh for Life's" very moving words instead. So, quoted below is much of what the home page of "Laugh for Life" had to say...

Imagine living your life being forced to feel ashamed of who you are, being perceived as a "bad person." That’s the reality faced by 800+ HIV victims and 1,100+ AIDS victims who reside in New Mexico. These local New Mexicans are living with the disease known as HIV – and many will end up dying of AIDS. What’s worse than having this disease is living every day with the stigma and discrimination that accompany HIV/AIDS; having your children taunted because of your health status… having a landlord evict you because you have HIV… friends and family refusing to speak to you… facing the pressure at work to quit because co-workers are afraid they’ll contract the virus.

The timing is momentous: Over 25 years ago, in 1981, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) published the first reported case of AIDS. Since then, over 50 million people around the world have been infected and HIV transmission continues to increase in many economically disadvantaged states. We honor the people who have lost their lives or their loved ones due to HIV/AIDS during the past 25 years of this epidemic. We join in struggle with those that are still fighting.

What we know to be morally correct — that the lives of millions of poor people with AIDS are no less expendable than the lives of those with AIDS who live in wealthy countries, and that access to treatment is a human right — it is also prudent to bring support, medical services and education to those in need.

We all know that AIDS does not a discriminate. There is no limit to race, religion, sexual orientation, or gender. The AIDS virus may be contracted by anyone, anywhere, throughout the world. Our goal is to allow for organizations like New Mexico AIDS Services to continue its hard work and educate individuals on precautions that may be taken to avoid contracting this disease in addition to providing services to those already infected.

Would you like to be a part of alleviating troubles for those in need? We invite you to help support the "Laugh for Life" AIDS Outreach Benefit Concert taking place Friday, August 4, 2006 in the Kiva Auditorium at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The night will be filled with distinguished speakers and guests including Mayor Martin Chavez. The hosts for the evening will be Jeff Siembieda and Eric Martinez, C.E.O. of Power Moves Entertainment. We are also very proud to present our main attractions for the evening Comedians Joey Medina and Alex Reymundo from “The Latin Kings of Comedy”, Darren Carter and Mike Robles as seen on Comedy Central. All four comedians will also be appearing on the “Latin Palooza” Tour ( www.latinpalooza.tv (http://www.latinpalooza.tv/)). Other guest appearances to be announced.

Please take a moment to consider sponsorship (http://www.laughforlifebenefit.com/sponsorbenefits.aspx) of this year’s “Laugh For Life” AIDS Outreach Benefit Concert, we look forward to your support.
