Default Johnsons of Madrid Galleries of Fine and Fiber Art

By pengwen
Water. Rain. Such a valuable resource in our desert environs! Yet it also can be a destructive force.
When we started planning this issue, the rains had not yet started. The remnants of Hurricane Dolly had not spilled over Ruidoso.
We are awed by nature’s forces, both sides – constructive and destructive. And we add our prayers for quick recovery to all those affected by flooding.
During hot August, we seek cool. Michael Lewis’s painting Leaseburg - Shadows cools us down just thinking about a favored watering hole. Michael Lewis, of Grants, will be teaching a workshop in August. (Please see “Plein Air Painters” story in Content section.)
I stumbled upon Dorothy Bunny Bowen’s wonderful jazzy, impression of the Sandias when I sought out images for the early August fashion and silk show at Johnsons of Madrid Galleries. Beautifully executed, her work on kimono silk shows the influence of her trips to Japan and her studies in the ancient method of Rozome on silk.
“Water is a recurring theme for me,” she writes. “Living in the desert Southwest, I’m aware of every drop that falls, flows or evaporates anywhere nearby.”
In the Desert Even the Mountains Dance for Rain (Isn’t that a great title?) was made from a view of the Sandias at the Coronado Monument in Bernalillo. The 22-28-inch piece now in a private collection, succinctly states our emotions about rain. Dorothy Bunny Bowen is represented by Johnsons of Madrid Galleries of Fine and Fiber Art. Visit her website:
Says Dorothy Bunny Bowen: “I believe we should live lightly on this earth in absolute awe of its magnificence.”
